Actions of Hajj
By Shaykh:
Muhammad ibn Sālih al-‘Uthaymīn
(May Allah have mercy upon him)
The actions of the first day, which is day eight.
1. One who is residing in Makkah and its surroundings assumes Ihrām for Hajj from his place, whilst bathing, applying perfume, wearing the Ihrām garments, and saying:
“Labbayk Hajjā; labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk lā sharīka laka labbayk; innal-hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk lā sharīka lak (In response to Your call here I come for Hajj. O Allah, here I come in response to Your call, here I come. Here I come in response to Your call, You have no partner, here I come. Verily all praise, favor, and dominion belong to You; there is no partner with You).” As for one who had not come to Makkah until this day and was coming from beyond the Miqāts, he must not pass the Miqāt without assuming Ihrām. 2. He should proceed to Mina and remain there until sunrise on the ninth day, offering there the Zhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers (of the ninth day), each in its due time, whilst shortening the four-Rak‘ah prayers.
The Actions of the Second Day (The Ninth Day)
1. After sunrise, he proceeds to Arafah, offers the Zhuhr and Asr prayers shortened and combined, and alights at Namirah before noon, if possible.
2. He devotes himself, after the prayer, to Dhikr and supplication, facing the Qiblah and raising his hands, until sunset.
3. After sunset, he proceeds to Muzdalifah, where he offers the Maghrib prayer as three Rak‘ahs and the Isha prayer as two Rak‘ahs, and he spends the night there until dawn breaks.
4. He offers the Fajr prayer after the break of dawn, then he devotes himself to Dhikr and supplication until the morning is clearly bright.
5. He proceeds to Mina before sunrise.
Acts of the Third Day Which is the Day of Eid
1. Upon reaching Mina, he stones Jamrat al-Aqabah with seven pebbles to be thrown successively, one at a time. He says the Takbīr with each throw.
2. Slaughtering the sacrificial animal, if any.
3- He shaves his head or shortens it, and thereby achieves the first Tahallul; he may then wear his clothes, apply perfume, and all prohibitions of Ihrām become permissible for him, except for matters related to women.
4. He descends upon Makkah and performs Tawāf al-Ifādah (Tawāf of Hajj), and performs Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah for Hajj if he is performing Tamattu‘ Hajj, or if he is performing Ifrād or Qirān Hajj and has not performed Sa‘i after the Arrival Tawāf.
With this, the second Tahallul is achieved, and all things forbidden during Ihrām become permissible for him, even women.
5. He should return to Mina and spend the 11th night there.
The Practice of the Fourth Day Which is the Eleventh Day
He stones the three Jamrahs—the first, then the middle one, then Jamrat al-Aqabah—each with seven successive pebbles, saying the Takbīr with each pebble. He throws them after the sun passes the meridian, as it is not permissible to do so before it, and he stands to supplicate after the first and the middle Jamrahs.
2. One should spend the 12th night at Mina.
The Rites of the Fifth Day The 12th of Dhul-Hijjah
1. He stones the three Jamrahs as he did on the fourth day.
2. He departs from Mina before sunset if he wishes to hasten, or stays the night there if he wishes to delay his departure.
Acts of the Sixth Day Which is the Thirteenth Day
This day is for whoever delays his departure; on it, the following is done:
1. He stones the three Jamrahs as he did on the two previous days.
2. Departing from Mina after that.
And the last ritual is the Farewell Tawāf before traveling, and Allah knows best.
