{Every soul shall taste death.} [Surat Āl ‘Imrān: 185]
{Every soul shall taste death.} [Surat Āl ‘Imrān: 185]
The Prophet (ﷺ) saw a funeral and said: “A relieved one and one from others are relieved. The believing servant is relieved from the hardships and harm of this world towards the mercy of Allah, while the wicked servant is one from whom people, the land, trees, and animals are relieved.” [Narrated by Al-Bukhāri (6512)]
Ta‘ziyah (Condolences)
May Allah console you well, mend your affliction, and forgive your deceased one.
To Allah belongs what He takes, and to Him belongs what He gives, and for everything, He sets a specific term. So have patience and seek the reward from Allah.
The manner of performing Janāzah (funeral) prayer
First, one should make the Takbīr, then seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan, say Bismillah, and recite Surat Al-Fātihah.
Then he makes the second Takbīr and invokes blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ) in the same manner as he does in the Tashahhud at the end of the prayer.
Then, he makes the third Takbīr and supplicates for the deceased.
Then, he makes the fourth Takbīr, pauses for a little while and supplicates if he wishes, and then makes one Taslīm to his right, saying: “Assalamu ‘alaykum warahmatullah.” (May Allah's peace and mercy be upon you.).
Among the supplications mentioned in the prayer over the dead:
(O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him wellness, and pardon him. Make his resting place honorable, and make his entry place spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail, and purify him from sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him in exchange a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the trial of the grave and the torment of Hellfire.) [Narrated by Muslim (963)]
“Allahumm aghfir lihayyina wamayyitina, wasaghīrina wakabīrina, wadhakarina wa’unthāna, washāhidina waghā’ibina, alllahumm man ahyaytahu minna fa’ahyihi ‘ala al-islam, waman tawaffaytahu minna fatawaffahu ‘ala al-iman, alllahumma la tahrimna ajrahu, wala tudillana ba‘dah.” (O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those of us who are young and those who are old, our males and our females, and those of us who are present and those who are absent. O Allah, whoever of us You give life, let him live upon Islam, and whoever of us You take in death, let him die upon faith. O Allah, deprive us not of his reward and do not lead us astray after him.) [Narrated by Abu Dāwūd (3201); Al-Albāni classified it as Sahīh (authentic)]
If the deceased is a child, say instead of seeking forgiveness for him:
Allahumm ij‘alhu faratan wadhukhran liwalidayhi, washafī‘an mujāban, alllahumm thaqqil bihi mawāzīnahuma, wa’a‘zim bihi ’ujūrahuma, wa’alhiqhu bisālih almuminīn, waj‘alhu fi kafālati Ibrahīm, waqihi birahmatika ‘adhāb al-jahīm, wa’abdilhu dāran khayran min dārih, wa’ahlan khayran min ahlih, alllahumm aghfir li’aslāfina, wa’afrātina, waman sabaqanā bilīman.” (O Allah, make him a forerunner and a reward in store for his parents, and an accepted intercessor. O Allah, make their scales heavy and their rewards great on account of him, join him with the righteous believers, put him under the care of Abraham, and save him by Your mercy from the punishment of Hellfire, and grant him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family. O Allah, forgive our predecessors, our young ones, and those who preceded us in faith.) See "Al-Mughni" by Ibn Qudāmah (3/416).
